For How Long Human Brain Live After Death -- A Quick Explanation Here

The duration for which the human brain continues to function after death is a complex topic, as it depends on how one defines “functioning.” Immediately after clinical death, where the heart stops beating and blood flow to the brain ceases, several processes occur:

Electrical Activity: Brain electrical activity decreases rapidly but doesn’t stop instantly. Some studies suggest that detectable electrical activity can persist for up to 10 minutes after clinical death.

Cellular Activity: Neurons and other brain cells begin to die due to lack of oxygen and nutrients. This process can take several hours. Some studies have found that specific brain cells can remain viable for many hours post-mortem under certain conditions.

Gene Expression: Recent research has shown that certain genes in the brain can remain active and even increase their activity for several hours after death.

Consciousness: Most experts agree that consciousness ceases within a few seconds to minutes after the heart stops and blood flow to the brain is interrupted.

In summary, while the brain’s electrical activity can persist briefly after death and cellular processes continue for several hours, consciousness and coordinated brain function stop almost immediately after the cessation of blood flow.
