How Long Does it Take to Climb Mount Everest? Everything You Need to Know is Here

Climbing Mount Everest typically takes about 6 to 10 weeks from arrival in Nepal to reaching the summit and descending safely. Here’s a general breakdown of the timeline:

1. Travel to Base Camp (1–2 weeks)

Fly to Lukla from Kathmandu and trek to Everest Base Camp (EBC): This acclimatization trek takes around 8–12 days.

2. Acclimatization and Preparation (2–3 weeks)

Spend time at Base Camp (5,364 m / 17,598 ft) to acclimatize.

Do several rotations up and down the mountain (to Camps 1, 2, and sometimes 3) to help your body adjust to altitude.

3. Summit Push (5–10 days)

When a good weather window appears (usually in May), climbers launch the summit push.

The push typically involves:

Climb to Camp 2 (6,400 m)

Camp 3 (7,200 m)

Camp 4 (South Col) (7,900 m)

Summit day: Leave around midnight and aim to summit and descend the same day.

Return to Base Camp takes another 2–3 days.

4. Descent and Return (~1 week)

After reaching Base Camp, trekkers typically hike back to Lukla and fly to Kathmandu.

Total Time: 6 to 10 weeks

The summit day itself can take 10 to 20+ hours, depending on weather, health, and traffic on the mountain.
